HemCheck Sweden AB (publ.) has developed and commercialized a product that detects hemolysis in blood samples at the point of care.
Hemolysis, or the rupturing of red blood cells, is the most common reason why a blood sample is deemed unfit for laboratory analysis. In fact, 45 million blood tests fail every year due to Hemolysis. When a sample cannot be analysed, it results in delayed treatment, increased risks for patients andhigher costs for clinics. HemCheck offers a convenient solution to this globalproblem by providing a fast and reliable test that makes every sample count.
HemCheck Sweden AB (publ.) is a privately held medical technology company based in Karlstad, Sweden and is based on an invention by Dr Mathias Karlsson.
Today in accordance with routine, blood samples are taken by a qualified nurse. The sample is sent to a laboratory for analysis and the results are reported back to the attending physician and/or nurse. Several of the most common analyses are sensitive to hemolysis and, until now, this could only identified in a laboratory environment.
If the blood sample has hemolyzed, no analysis can be performed and the blood sample has to be retaken.
With Helge® by HemCheck, a blood sample is immediately assessed to determine if it has hemolyzed. Within seconds, you know if it is of sufficient quality to be passed on for analysis at the laboratory.
“In the beginning, I saw it as a test tube with an associated analysis result. But today I see the whole picture. I see the huge consequences hemolysishas on entire patient flow.”
Dr Mathias Karlsson, a physician and founder of HemCheck, has worked both as a nurse and a doctor. He attended Karolinska Institute where he wrote his dissertation on the diagnosis of newborn children.
Healthcare has a lot to do with flow. Staff members plan their shifts with a constant eye on their list of priorities. A blood sample that needs to be

The idea of eliminating hemolysis in healthcare was born out of frustration. It was during his work with newborn children that Dr Mathias Karlsson witnessed the negative effects hemolysis could have on the entire healthcare system. Mathias needed quick and accurate analytical responses to provide care for his small patients. In the case of hemolysis, an important puzzle bit was missing – the puzzle bit that determined the right treatment or if the treatment would have the desired effect.
In 2010 Mathias founded HemCheck together with Hjalmar Didrikson, Alfvén and Didrikson Invest. What began as an idea then became an invention and from there it was developed and refined by a dedicated team of people.
The company’s vision became reality and resulted in the solution that is available today: Helge® – the hemolysis test. And the name Helge? “Hemolysis level gauge equipment” of course.
